20th Prioress Elected for Chicago Benedictines

On Saturday, April 15, 2023, Sister Mary Susan Remsgar, OSB, was voted to serve as the Benedictine Sisters of Chicago’s 20th Prioress for the next four years. Through thoughtful discernment, the St. Scholastica Monastery community prayerfully held a canonical election facilitated by the St. Scholastica Monastic Congregation President and facilitator.

Born and raised in Waukegan, IL, Sister Mary Susan first met the Benedictine Sisters of Chicago at Mother of God Parish school and then attended Holy Child High School, before entering the Benedictine community. She completed her Bachelors of Arts at Mundelein College and earned a Master’s Degree in Christian Spirituality from Creighton University and a Master’s Degree in Social Work from Colorado State University. First as an educator in parish elementary schools in both Chicago and Colorado, Sister Mary Susan then served in parishes in Colorado for 20 years prior to her over 20 years as a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW) for the Colorado State Psychiatric Hospitals.

“I want to express my deep appreciation and gratitude to these Benedictine women for who they are and for all they have given to the people of God over so many years of dedicated ministry in Chicago and Colorado,” said Sister Mary Susan Remsgar, OSB, the newly elected Prioress. “With God's help and grace, I hope to bring all the gifts with which God has blessed me in faithful service to my sisters as we move together toward the future God is unfolding for us.”

Sister Mary Susan Remsgar is keenly aware of the over 160 years of service the Chicago Benedictines have brought to both Illinois and Colorado as she embarks on her term at the helm as the community’s next leader. “May the blessings of this Easter season renew our hope in all of God's promises as we move forward in our lives trusting God is ever faithful to his promises.”

The Installation of Prioress will be held Sunday June 18, 2023 at St. Scholastica Monastery.

Since 1861, the Benedictine Sisters of Chicago have served where there is need in a number of ministries including education, counseling, spirituality programs, and direct service. More information about the Chicago Benedictines can be found here: osbchicago.org.
